Challenge

Create a memorable experience

The event media needed to establish a strong connection to the European Film Academy brand, while also reflecting the unique location of the event, Reykjavik, Iceland, and seamlessly integrating with the interior of the venue, Harpa Concert Hall.

APPROACH

Connecting the brand, location, and the venue

I've worked together with local artists, freelance motion designers, stage designers, European Film Academy Director and Head of Marketing, to develop designs that fit seamlessly into the rest of the event. I've designed six backdrops, including two main, 14m long ones for the red carpet. The design was a digital painting, inspired by Icelandic aerial photography. I've intentionally chosen dark blue colours, to make the stars shine the brightest! It also allowed for the European Film Awards and Academy logos to stand out and appear clearly on all of the press pictures, to further promote the ceremony and the Academy. An Icelandic artist Tanja Levý has created incredible moss sculptures to work together with the backdrop. She also created screen visuals for the stage displays, bringing more of Icelandic natural elements to the red, lava-like Harpa Hall's auditorium. The typography overlays came from the Academy team.

RESULTS

Strong visuals to make for a memorable event

European Film Awards was an unforgettable event. From the event location, to the hilarious hosts, the Art Walk and the Award ceremony itself – it was spectacular.

European Filmmakers, team and members of the Academy

The highlight of the event media design were the backdrops and the digital screen overlays. For the backdrops I have created digital artworks inspired by Icelandic aerial photography. The backdrops were the main feature of the red carpet / Art Walk, with stars and celebrities being photographed in front of them. Tanja Levi, an Icelandic artist, has created incredible moss sculptures that worked together with the main backdrop, in creating an art piece.
